New Publication Highlights Climate Adaptation Strategies for Smallholder Farmers

A new research publication documents effective climate adaptation strategies employed by smallholder farmers around Lake Victoria Basin.

A new research publication has been released documenting effective climate adaptation strategies employed by smallholder farmers around Lake Victoria Basin. The study, conducted through participatory research methods, identifies locally-appropriate adaptation measures and their effectiveness in building climate resilience.

The publication, titled "Climate Change Adaptation Strategies for Smallholder Farmers: Lessons from Lake Victoria Basin," presents findings from extensive fieldwork with farming and fishing communities. Key adaptation strategies documented include climate-resilient fishing practices, drought-resistant crop varieties, early warning systems, and ecosystem-based adaptation measures.

The research reveals that community-led adaptation approaches are more sustainable than top-down interventions, and that traditional knowledge combined with modern science yields better results. The study also highlights the crucial roles that women play in climate adaptation efforts.

Lead researcher Dr. Grace Tumusiime noted: "This publication provides valuable insights for policymakers and development practitioners working on climate adaptation. The strategies documented here can inform broader adaptation planning and implementation efforts."

The publication is available in open access format and includes practical recommendations for supporting community-based climate adaptation initiatives.
