The Community-Based Climate Adaptation project in the Lake Victoria Basin is showing promising early results, demonstrating the effectiveness of community-led approaches to building climate resilience among fishing and farming communities.
The project, which has been running for eight months, has successfully engaged communities in participatory adaptation planning and implementation of locally-appropriate climate adaptation measures. Key achievements include the establishment of early warning systems, implementation of climate-resilient fishing practices, and adoption of drought-resistant crop varieties.
Community members have reported improved preparedness for climate-related risks and increased confidence in their ability to adapt to changing conditions. The project has also strengthened social cohesion and collective action within participating communities.
"The community-based approach has been crucial to our success," explained project coordinator Dr. Grace Tumusiime. "When communities are actively involved in identifying solutions and implementing adaptation measures, the results are more sustainable and effective."
The project will continue for another 16 months, with plans to document lessons learned and develop guidelines for scaling up community-based adaptation approaches in other regions.
